No, but it can't be. It's good for what it is, but regulations mean that making a super light hot hatch cannot happen anymore. The 208 GTI is more of an evolution of the idea of the GTI nameplate than it is the resurrection of 205 GTI. Unfortunately, us Americans can't buy any new French cars.

If you tried hard enough I think you could get your hands on a New Peugeot in the states. They sell them in Mexico so I've seen a couple in Texas. I would imagine importing Mexico to Texas would be easier than from France. But I bet they don't bring the hot one to mexico either, but I really have no idea

Then you run into the same trouble that Skyline importers run into: it hasn't been approved by the NHTSA or the EPA so you can't register them. And if you keep the registration in Mexico, the car has to spend 6 mos. + 1 day in Mexico every year.

If that's it you can buy not one but two not-for-the-US cars and drive one of them for every day of the year minus two!

Note: I'm not actually sure what the limit is on how long the cars can stay in the US.

Honestly in Texas you could probably get away with Mexico plates pretty much indefinitely as long as you weren't an illegal immigrant (and maybe even if you were) especially in south Texas down by the border where I actually saw some peugeots

I drove one of these for a couple of laps on a trackday at Brands Hatch. Properly fun little car. Really eggs you on to go quicker. Very confidence inspiring.
For my tastes though, the steering is a bit over servo-ed. Not sure whether it's got electric power steering or hydraulic, but whatever it is I prefer a little more weight and feel. Pretty sure that's partially because I haven't driven a properly modern car before (anything from the late '00s).
Overall though, very impressed.

Peugeot is on a roll. The new second gen 308 I drove last week was really good as well, much better than the recent GM competitor (current gen Astra) I drove a few months ago. If I were to name 2002-2012 the Peugeot Malaise Era, would you agree?

I certainly would. The death of the 106 GTi (which coincided with the death of the 406) heralded it. Those were the last exceptional Peugeots I can think of. The rest were just sort of also-rans.
